Write a fairy tale with help from the Grimm brothers.

It's a simple concept, really. Using quotes from various fairy tales, students will build their own versions of classic fairy tales, focusing on storytelling logic. Simple, but not easy!

You could dig through the Grimm stories yourself and find quotes you like, or let me do the work for you and save time.

This book is divided into three sections of prompts: Beginnings, Middles, and Endings. Each section works on a different aspect of storytelling and logical thinking. Think of the formula as ABC.

Beginning prompts: Students are given “A” and have to come up with what leads to “B” and “C.” Generally, these prompts give characters and setting, but few clues about conflict and plot.

Middle prompts: This type of prompt works on the middle logic of a story. Students are given “B” and have to come up with a logical start “A” as well as a logical conclusion, “C.” The conflict is well underway, so they have to unravel what is going on.

Endings: Starting with the conclusion, “C,” students work the logic backward to arrive at “A” and “B.” Like a detective walking in on a crime scene, they have to come up with characters and motivations and a logical plot that makes sense with the ending.

Appendix: This section lists the story prompt with its original source. Once students have written their stories, they can go and read the Grimms’ version and compare ideas.

Part of a Series: The Lessons From Grimm Series includes additional student workbooks that focus on writing characters, setting, plot and more.

(Note: Most of the same prompts are in the grade 7-12 workbook, but that workbook has double the prompts. If you're on the fence as to which book to buy, purchase the Grades 7-12 if you're buying the pdf version as its the best value. If you're buying the print versions, go with the grade level of your students.)

Chapter 1

Note to Students:

Grimms’ fairy tales include magical stories as well as fables. When you see a prompt, start thinking, “What if…” and go from there. Think of a few ideas and then pick the one you like most and write about that. For example, if you think a pot should be magically fill with porridge whenever someone tells it to, then make it so. Or maybe you would rather the magic pot fill with pizza!

In this book you’ll get to work with beginning, middle, and ending prompts quoted from Grimms’ fairy tales.

Beginnings: In these prompts, the Grimms start the story for you, giving you characters and setting. You get to come up with the conflict and the plot. Start by thinking about what could go wrong…

Middles: Here you are stuck in the middle. What happened before and what is going to happen after? Remember to introduce us to your characters and show us the setting where the story is taking place.

Endings: Work backward to find out how the characters ended up here. It’s like you are a fairy tale detective and have to piece all the evidence together.

Appendix: Look here to find out which story the prompt came from. Then go and compare your story with the Grimms’ original.

Examples:
A beginning prompt:

There was once a King's son who was seized with a desire to travel about the world, and took no one with him but a faithful servant.

A middle prompt:
At length the three brothers arrived at a castle where stone horses were standing in the stables, and no human being was to be seen, and they went through all the halls until, quite at the end, they came to a door in which were three locks.

An ending prompt:
Thereupon the wedding was celebrated, and the lion was again taken into favor, because, after all, he had told the truth.

Meet the author:

SHONNA SLAYTON grew up in the mountains of beautiful British Columbia before moving to the Arizona desert. Though her house doesn't yet have a turret, there is a kitchen garden with potential....anyone have rapunzel seeds to share?

She writes stories inspired by fairy tales and history for readers who love to escape into other worlds that are grounded in truth, dusted with magic, and created for whimsical wanderings. In essence, a perfect weekend or beach read.

Her signature series features magical heirlooms passed down through generations, just like the necklace in this picture. This was her grandmother's favorite necklace, probably because it goes with everything and brings up warm memories.
