Grimms’ Fairy Tales

How many of Grimms’ fairy tales do you know? They wrote over two hundred tales. You may have read their versions of Cinderella, Snow White, or Hansel and Gretel. But did you know they also wrote folk tales like the Hare and the Hedgehog and The Bremen Town Musicians?

Surprisingly, even though Grimms’ stories are called fairy tales, there are no fairies. Nor are there any fairy godmothers. Instead, the Grimms write of wise women who have magical abilities that they use for good. And would it surprise you, like it did me, that there are very few dragons in Grimm? They also wrote scary stories and religious tales.

Before reading on, stop and think about your favorite fairy tales and see if you can pinpoint what kind of fairy tale you like best.
